Challenge

Cambridge Chesterton Bowls Club was previously reliant on an outdated, manual scoreboard system. This setup required considerable time and effort to update scores for each game, significantly hindering operational efficiency and limiting the club's potential for advertising revenue.

Results

The integration of the DurantSports Totaliser and Rink-End Bowls System revolutionised the club's operations. The new system streamlined score updates, reduced the time required for these updates to be instant, and enhanced advertising revenue. Overall, the system greatly improved the experience for players and spectators alike, while also contributing to the club's financial growth.

"We used to have a very old scoreboard which was a number plate system that we had to manually put each letter up on the board. Now we've got a fantastic new system with a laptop. We just type the names in, scores are instantly on the board."

"We have the individual televisions now where we have posts at the bottom so people don't have to go up onto the bank. They can remotely put the scores into the system, which is much quicker, much better all around."

"Now we've got the option to run on the main screen or totaliser, the advertising brings in more revenue for us, so partly pays for the scoreboard, which is great."

About Chesterton Indoor Bowls

Chesterton Indoor Bowls Club has a proud history dating back to 1973 and recently marked its 50th anniversary. In recent years, the club has invested heavily in modernising its facilities. During the pandemic, the venue was used by the NHS, helping to raise funds and support the local community. Those funds have since been reinvested back into the club, enabling a wide programme of improvements. Alongside the new scoreboard system, upgrades have also been made to the rinks, restaurant, toilets, and other key areas.

The Challenge

Chesterton BeforeChesterton Indoor Bowls Club required a complete replacement of their existing manual scoreboard setup, including removal of the existing equipment and installation of a fully integrated modern system. This involved not just the supply of new technology, but also significant electrical, cabling, and framework work to ensure that the installation blended seamlessly into the venue. Above all, the club needed a system that would deliver clarity and impact for every match played, across all eight rinks.

The Solution

Chesterton DevelopmentWe designed and delivered a bespoke 8 Rink End & Totaliser System centred around a 3m x 2m LED Master Scoreboard. This high-definition screen provides clear and dynamic displays of home and away scores, rink ends, player names, and a game timer. It also allows for full graphic adverts to be displayed via a laptop running custom-designed software, giving the club flexibility to showcase sponsors or club announcements in a professional format.

Each rink end was fitted with its own 32-inch scoring screen, wall-mounted for visibility and paired with remote-control handsets to allow simple and accurate score entry by match officials. To ensure everything was integrated smoothly, we carried out a complete removal of the old scoreboard and associated cabling, before running new data and power connections throughout the venue.

We also manufactured and installed bespoke scorer mounting posts, powder-coated in a colour of the club’s choosing, and built a laminated plyboard surround to box in the main scoreboard for a neat, professional finish. Additional works included adjustments to the scorer’s desk to accommodate the new laptop and operator’s area, the installation of a second monitor for staff use, and the connection of the scoreboard to the club’s existing amplifier and speaker system for audio integration.

The Results

Chesterton-AfterThe project has transformed Chesterton Indoor Bowls Club’s scoring facilities. The new system not only improves clarity and accuracy during matches but also enhances the overall atmosphere within the venue. Players benefit from clearly visible rink-end scoring, while spectators enjoy the professional look and feel of the large LED display. The ability to run advertisements and messages also provides the club with fresh opportunities to engage sponsors and generate revenue.

We are proud to have delivered a turnkey solution that meets the club’s immediate needs while also preparing them for future growth and opportunities. The installation at Chesterton Indoor Bowls Club demonstrates how modern scoreboard technology can elevate the sporting experience for any sport.

Kevin, CEO of Cambridge Chesterton Bowls Club, shares his verdict on their new DurantSports Totaliser and Rink-End bowls system, explaining how it has improved club operations while also highlighting its benefits as a valuable revenue generator.
